Tips and Tricks

Because we are already getting tired of people asking for our recommendations, here they are!

Vietnam

  • Phu Quoc: a great little island by the border with Cambodia.
    • Lien Hiep Thanh: our hotel, which we really liked. A small boutique hotel with 20 bungalows. We payed $30/night
    • Night market in Duong Dong for some delicious and cheap fish and seafood
    • do not go squid fishing, it's stupid
  • Danang:
    • Go catch a sunrise on the beach. Even if it is cloudy, you will not be disappointed...
  • Hue:
    • Serene Palace Hotel, an amazing hotel with uber-friendly staff
    • Phuong Nam, aka "La Cantine": dirty cheap, excellent place. Great for breakfast, lunch and dinner (it is absolutely OK to do all 3 on the same day). 38, ĐƯỜNG TRẦN CAO VÂN
  • Phong Nha:
    • Go to Paradise Cave, it's unbelievable. We only visited the 1st kilometer; some tours take you 7km into the cave, not sure if it worth it.
  • Bai Tu Long bay:
    • Try to go there in addition to the Halong bay. it is much less busy with tourists, and very beautiful too.
    • We really enjoyed staying on Quand Lan for 2 nights/1 day and be the only foreigners on the island. Try it if you have the time!
  • Sapa:
    • avoid booking a tour from Hanoi, it will be cheaper from Sapa, by discussing directly with the guides, and this way you can customize your itinerary too!

      • Bee (pi) (more experienced than Vivi, probably better, maybe a little more expensive)

Laos:

  • Muang Khua:
    • stay at Manmootan guest house, they are very friendly, and a much better value than some of the other guesthouses (we looked at 3 others and they sucked)
  • Nong Khiaw:
    • there is a great hike to the second highest summit around Nong Khiaw, which you can do by yourself. It is a steep but relatively easy and well marked hike, about 3 hours round trip. The entrance point is kind of hard to describe, but is it around these coordinates: 20.567536,102.617572. Coming from the bridge, it is a small path on the left, and it will look like you are going to some people's house. Just keep going!
  • Luang Prabang:
    • Biking to the Phu Si falls is a bad idea, so you should do it

Thailand:

  • Nong Khai/Udon Thani:
    • if you are in one of those cities, make a day trip of a visit to Phu Phrabat historical park. It is a great place, easily reached by motorbike (about 1.5hours one way)
