The first rule of backpacking: the cheapest option (that won't kill you) is the winner. Our first travel day from New York to Hong Kong took us a mere 30 hours. We don't want to brag, but we saved a whopping $50 on this flight (although we were willing to pay $200 by hour 5 in the airport just to sit in a comfortable chair in one of the lounges. Fortunately, they didn't let us in).
As you can imagine, this was a wonderful experience, and we rode an emotional rollercoaster for those 30 hours.
The Ups:
- COUPONS!!! We got a 2 euro coupon during our layover in Istanbul. But we have no room in our bags and no budget for anything so, in order to put this bounty to great use, we would have to find something that cost just 2 euros. Challenge accepted! And we successfully killed 2 hours to find candy bars.
- Surprisingly delicious Merlot on the plane was a life savor / sedative
- Free lukums all over the Istanbul duty free
- A memorable view of Hong Kong from the sky before landing
The Downs:
- 30 hours of commute
- Depression
- Sleeping in awkward positions on airport chairs
- Eating too many free lukums all over the Istanbul duty free
More to come on Hong Kong very soon!!
