After several months in Southeast Asia, we have love/hate/appreciation and an intimate understanding of rice. We were not surprised, therefore, to be invited to Cambodia's first ever Rice Festival. It may sound like a casual tasting event or worse: a joke. In reality, it's a very formal event, in which ministers from various countries meet with development and finance NGOs, the IMF, and IFC to discuss rice.
The event took place in the ballroom of the Sofitel, Siem Reap. We rubbed shoulders and mingled with importers and exporters of rice, as well as heads of various development projects.
Also, we ate a LOT of rice.
